World War II vet beaten to death by thugs.
America doesn't have a GUN VIOLENCE problem, we have a "Lack of Basic Respect of Others" problem.
Here's a man who served his country, and was beaten by two scumbags who simply didn't give a damn about Mr. Belton's right to live.
These scum are among us. They walk the streets we walk, they live in the cities we live in, and they do not care about anyone else. If they see something they want, they take it, by force, and they do not care that it doesn't belong to them, or that they didn't earn it,or that they have no right to take it. They simply DO. NOT. CARE.
Those who would have us believe we're safer without civilians owning firearms would have us all living in a society where physically stronger, younger, more ruthless people can dominate the weak, old, and considerate. This is their idea of a "civil society".
As Marko so eloquently wrote (no, it wasn't written by "Major Caudill"),
The gun is the only personal weapon that puts a 100-pound woman on equal footing with a 220-pound mugger, a 75-year old retiree on equal footing with a 19-year old gangbanger, and a single gay guy on equal footing with a carload of drunk guys with baseball bats. The gun removes the disparity in physical strength, size, or numbers between a potential attacker and a defender.
Now, I don't know the specifics of this attack. I don't know if Mr. Belton had a firearm, or if he did but was jumped and never had sufficient time to draw, or anything else.
What I do know is this: In a society where civilians are not permitted to carry a firearm for their own safety, this is the result. Elderly men get beaten to death by thugs. Not shot... beaten. But just as dead.
When will people understand that?
