Waste more, want more

Ah, the United Nations. Always a favorite target of pundits and critics, has got their tail caught in a crack again:

NEW YORK, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Up to about a third of the $590 million U.N. fund spent for the Indian Ocean tsunami relief may have gone to pay for overhead.

The Financial Times says its two-month investigation showed the money appears to have been spent on administration, staff and related costs. The $590 million was part of the United Nation's $1.1 billion disaster flash appeal.

The Bush administration has been roundly criticized by opposition for not contributing enough to the tsunami relief efforts (despite, for example, the Pac Fleet sending 45 airplanes, 57 helicopters, 25 ships, 422,324 gallons of water, 2124 tons of food, and caring for over 2200 patients... and that's just one aspect of the US response.) Considering what the UN has managed to accomplish with the money allocated for disaster relief, one must wonder why should we contribute to their funds?
